29-year-old Nigerian British elected as Uk’s younger Mayor

Princess Opeyemi Bright has been inaugurated as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom, in a historic moment for Nigerians in the diaspora and youth leadership.

For many, her story is a symbol of resilience and inspiration, proving that with support, values, and opportunity, Nigerian youth can thrive and lead—anywhere in the world.

Her ascension also presents a call to action for Nigerian policymakers. As the diaspora continues to excel globally, there is a strategic opportunity to engage this community in national development. BUA Chairman praises Dangote for cement price freeze initiatives, Calls him for driving force of ideas

BUA Group chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has confirmed that a landmark agreement to keep cement prices steady for government contractors was initiated by Aliko Dangote. Rabiu disclosed this during a recent Channels TV interview, revealing that the pact is aimed at supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope infrastructure programme.

According to him, Dangote approached him with the proposal, and he immediately agreed to collaborate in the national interest.

He explained that the decision would shield contractors working on Renewed Hope projects from future cement price hikes

What this means is that any company handling these specific government projects will purchase cement at a fixed price, with no increase for the foreseeable future,” Rabiu said. He emphasized that this move is a significant show of support for the federal government’s infrastructure vision.

Rabiu was full of praise for Dangote, describing him as the driving force behind the idea. “Aliko Dangote deserves credit for bringing up this initiative. I agreed right away, and we’ll be sending official letters to the Ministry of Works next week to formalize the arrangement,” he added.

The BUA chairman also commended Engineer Dave Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, for his decision to prioritize concrete roads. He highlighted that concrete roads are more durable and economical in the long run, which aligns with the current strategy of major cement producers.

To ensure better coordination across the industry, Rabiu revealed plans to reorganize the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

He said the board will be refreshed to better support national infrastructure efforts and maintain effective industry wide collaboration. He said the board will be refreshed to better support national infrastructure efforts and maintain effective industry wide collaboration.

Addressing concerns over cement prices in the market, Rabiu defended the current rates, stating that despite public sentiment, cement in Nigeria remains competitively priced. “If you look across Africa, cement goes for at least $120 per ton, so what we’re offering is still affordable considering our production costs,” he clarified.

Detained NANS President Drags Seyi Tinubu, DSS To Court, Demands ₦38.3 Billion

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking enforcement of his fundamental human rights and demanding over ₦38 billion in damages.

Filed on May 14, 2025, and marked Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/966/2025, the suit lists the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Director of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), and Mr. Seyi Tinubu—son of President Bola Tinubu—as the 1st to 3rd respondents, respectively.

Isah, through his legal counsel Ugwueze I. Oduegbu and R.O. Ifebhor of Ajunwa & Co., is seeking a series of declarations and orders from the court, including:

A declaration that his alleged abduction, unlawful detention for over 15 days, and continued incarceration without charge constitute a gross violation of his rights to freedom of movement under Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

A declaration that the alleged torture, brutal beating, stabbing, and psychological trauma inflicted on him amount to inhuman and degrading treatment under Section 34 of the Constitution and Articles 5 and 16 of the African Charter.

An order for his immediate and unconditional release from DSS custody.

An injunction restraining the respondents from further acts of kidnapping, torture, detention, and threats to his life.

Monetary compensation including:

₦32.87 billion in general damages

₦5.5 billion in exemplary damages

20% compounded interest on the judgment sum until full payment or deposit into an interest-yielding court account.

Background of the Case

Isah’s suit stems from a violent leadership tussle within NANS. During his inauguration at the Wells Carlton Hotel in Abuja, he was allegedly attacked by a rival faction of the student body said to have the backing of political elites, including Seyi Tinubu.

Following the attack, Isah was receiving medical treatment at a DSS clinic when he was reportedly taken away by operatives of the secret police. Since then, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Family Alleges Cover-Up and Health Concerns

In an interview with SaharaReporters, a member of Isah’s family raised alarm over his disappearance and deteriorating health, describing the DSS’s actions as “bandit-like.”

Why are the DSS operating like bandits? They whisked away a man who was nearly killed, while those responsible for the attack are walking free. Since they took him, we’ve had no word,” the relative lamented.

The family added that Isah’s wife and daughter are traumatized by his sudden disappearance and are demanding answers.

The matter is expected to come up for hearing on a date to be communicated by the court.

California Gov. Newsom outlines $12 billion deficit and freeze on immigrant health care access

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California is facing a $12 billion deficit that Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to help close by freezing enrollment in a state-funded health care program for immigrants living in California without legal status.

Newsom announced the deficit and his plans to cover it Wednesday as he outlined his nearly $322 billion state spending plan for the upcoming fiscal year.

Beyond higher-than-expected Medicaid spending, Newsom blamed broad economic uncertainty, including federal tariff policies and a volatile stock market. California relies heavily on revenue from a tax on capital gains.

Newsom’s finger-pointing on the budget shortfall is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever seen from a politician, and he shovels out a lot of it,” Gallagher said. “We’re in this mess because of his reckless spending, false promises, and failed leadership.”

His decision highlights Newsom’s struggle to protect his liberal policy priorities against budget challenges in his final years on the job and as he weighs his next political move, which could include a presidential run.

Immigration has become a politically potent issue nationally. Nearly half of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s tougher immigration approach, according to an AP-NORC poll conducted in April. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress have threatened to reduce Medicaid money for states that enroll immigrants living in the country illegally.

The freeze does not mean California is backing away from its support for immigrants, Newsom said.

No state has done more than the state of California, no state will continue to do more than the state of California by a long shot. And that’s a point of pride,” he said.

California was among one of the first states to extend free health care benefits to all poor adults regardless of their immigration status last year, an ambitious plan touted by Newsom to help the nation’s most populous state inch closer to a goal of universal health care. But the cost ran $2.7 billion more than the administration had anticipated.

Newsom in March suggested he was not considering rolling back health benefits for immigrants as the state was grappling with a $6.2 billion Medicaid shortfall. He also repeatedly defended the expansion, saying it saves the state money in the long run. The program is state-funded and does not use federal dollars.

Starting in 2027, adults with “unsatisfactory immigration status” on Medi-Cal will also have to pay a $100 monthly premium. The governor’s office said that is in line with the average cost paid by those who are on subsidized heath plans through California’s own marketplace. There’s no premium for most people currently on Medi-Cal.

We believe that people should have some skin in the game as it relates to contributions,” Newsom said.

Democratic state Sen. Dave Cortese said he opposed Newsom’s plan to scale back coverage for some immigrants without legal status.

Congress may be walking away from its obligation to the poor, the elderly, and the disabled, but California will not,” Cortese said in a statement.

Newsom’s proposals go against the commitment the state has made to the immigrant community, said Masih Fouladi, executive director of the California Immigrant Policy Center.

Questions about the practicality of the program aren’t even something that we want to entertain with,” he said. “The proposal just doesn’t match with our values as a state.”

Newsom also proposed eliminating state health care coverage for certain weight loss drugs beginning in January 2026, which would save an estimated $85 million for the upcoming fiscal year and $680 million by fiscal year 2028-29.

According to Dare, the forest guards will be well-trained, armed, and mandated to flush out criminal elements using the forests as hideouts for violent activities.

This is a joint security effort between the federal and state governments. The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Ministry of Environment have been directed to take charge and ensure full implementation,” he stated.
