Senate rejects Natasha’s request to resume, insists suspension remains [DETAILS]

The Senate has rejected Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s bid to return to plenary, insisting that her six-month suspension remains in effect pending the outcome of her appeal.

In a letter signed by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the Senate confirmed receiving Akpoti-Uduaghan’s notification that she intended to resume legislative duties on September 4, 2025, which she argued marked the end of her suspension.

However, the Senate maintained that her suspension, which began on March 6, 2025, is still valid and cannot be lifted while the case is before the Court of Appeal.

The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended in March over alleged breaches of Senate standing orders. The Federal High Court in Abuja later upheld the suspension, prompting her to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal.

The Senate stated that her suspension would only be reviewed after the appellate court delivers its judgment.

JUST IN: Peter Obi at Crossroads as Labour Party Confirms He Won’t Get 2027 Ticket

The Labour Party (LP) has declared that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will not be given the party’s ticket for the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made this known on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics.

We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi said, while stressing that the party’s momentum in the last election was not solely because of Obi but largely driven by the EndSARS movement and widespread discontent with the former president Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Arabambi also accused the LP’s acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist, Aisha Yesufu, of colluding with Obi, adding that the party would take steps to expel them. He further challenged Obi to openly announce his departure from the party.

Obi has one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC. If he believes he has the proficiency on his own to have seven million votes in 2027, we advise him to pronounce his departure from Labour Party,” he added

Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential election, has publicly backed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) but has yet to formally defect to the coalition platform.

FG Seeks Fresh $1.75bn World Bank Loan Despite Announcing Revenue Growth

The Federal Government is preparing to secure fresh financing from the World Bank to the tune of $1.75bn, even after celebrating a sharp increase in national revenues.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu had on Tuesday declared that Nigeria had already surpassed its 2025 revenue targets.

The Presidency, in its clarification of the president’s claim, said Nigeria raked in N20.59tn between January and August 2025, representing a 40.5 per cent jump compared to N14.6tn recorded in the same period last year. According to Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the surge was largely fuelled by non-oil revenues, which now contribute 75 per cent of total government collections.

Despite this strong fiscal performance and officials confirmed that borrowing would continue to bridge funding shortfalls in critical sectors.

Documents from the World Bank indicate that the Washington-based lender is expected to approve $1.75bn in new loans for Nigeria before year-end. The funds will be channelled into agriculture, health, digital infrastructure, and small business financing.

Among the projects earmarked for support is the $500m Nigeria Sustainable Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth project, designed to boost farm productivity and rural development. Also listed is a $500m digital infrastructure programme to expand connectivity and drive technology-driven growth, alongside a $250m health security initiative and a $500m inclusive finance project for micro, small, and medium enterprises.

The anticipated loans, currently at different stages of review and negotiation, show that the country continues to rely on external borrowing. According to World Bank records, the country has already secured $8.4bn in fresh credit lines over the past two years.

Former US president Undergoes Surgery for Skin cancer-Report

Former US President Joe Biden recently underwent a surgical procedure to address skin cancer, following the circulation of images and videos showing the 82-year-old with a noticeable bandage and mark on his forehead.

As reported by Fox News on Thursday, Biden’s spokesperson confirmed Mohs surgery is a highly precise technique that removes thin layers of skin one at a time, ensuring all cancerous cells are eliminated while protecting as much healthy tissue as possible. The exact type of skin cancer he was treated for has not been publicly disclosed.

This type of procedure is often recommended for early detection and treatment of skin cancers, underscoring the importance of vigilance and regular check-ups.

The procedure came to public attention after footage showed Biden leaving a church in Delaware over the Labour Day weekend with a visible bandage and scar on his forehead. Spokesperson Kelly Scully highlighted the careful approach of the surgery, emphasising that the goal was to completely remove the cancer while minimising skin damage

Recall, this is not Biden’s first experience with skin cancer.

In early 2023, while serving as president, he had a basal cell carcinoma lesion removed from his chest. Dr Kevin O’Connor, his White House physician at the time, confirmed that the cancerous tissue was entirely removed and no additional treatment was required.

Adding to his health challenges, in May 2025, Biden shared that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. Despite these serious diagnoses, he has maintained an optimistic outlook.

On social media, Biden reflected on his journey, “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”

Biden’s family history also highlights the widespread impact of cancer. His late son, Beau Biden, passed away from a brain tumour, and his wife, Jill Biden, had two cancerous skin lesions removed in 2023. Their experiences underscore the need for awareness, early detection, and timely treatment for all forms of cancer

At 82, Biden is the oldest living former U.S. president. He continues to manage his health carefully while participating in public engagements, demonstrating resilience and the importance of prioritising medical care.

Biden’s recent procedures highlight the critical importance of regular health screenings and early detection.

Skin cancer, prostate cancer, and other forms of cancer can often be treated successfully if caught early.

According to the American Cancer Society, regular screening and early detection are essential strategies in cancer prevention. They emphasise that adopting healthy lifestyle habits and being proactive about regular screenings can significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer.

For prostate cancer, the ACS recommends that men of average risk begin prostate-specific antigen testing at age 50, while those at higher risk, such as Black men or those with a family history, should start at age 45.

Families and communities are encouraged to support each other, share information on preventive measures, and seek timely care to reduce the risk and impact of cancer.

Nigerians to Pay Extra N45 Per Litre of Petrol From 2026 Under New Tax Law

From January 2026, Nigerians could face higher fuel costs as a result of the new Nigeria Tax Administration Act, which introduces a five per cent surcharge on refined fossil fuel products. If the current pump price of petrol remains at N900 per litre, motorists would pay an additional N45 on every litre purchased.

The surcharge is part of four new tax reform bills signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, aimed at broadening government revenue streams, encouraging clean energy adoption, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

According to the Act, the surcharge will be applied to chargeable transactions, including the supply, sale, or payment for fossil fuel products—“whichever occurs first.” The levy covers petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other refined petroleum products.

However, some products are exempt: household kerosene, cooking gas, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower.

The Act states: “A surcharge is imposed at five per cent on chargeable fossil fuel products provided or produced in Nigeria, and shall be collected at the time a chargeable transaction occurs.”

Implementation and Oversight

Although the law sets January 2026 as the intended commencement date, the exact timing remains subject to a formal directive from the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun. The minister is expected to announce the effective date through an order published in the Official Gazette.

Administration of the surcharge will fall to the Federal Inland Revenue Service, which will be rebranded as the Nigeria Revenue Service in 2026. The agency has been empowered to collect the levy on a monthly basis and issue further regulations for its enforcement.

Economic and Social Implications

Analysts say the measure reflects government efforts to boost non-oil revenues amid growing fiscal pressures and rising debt obligations. Yet its impact could be controversial, as higher fuel prices often have ripple effects on transportation, food costs, and inflation.

Some argue that the surcharge may accelerate Nigeria’s transition to renewable energy by discouraging heavy dependence on fossil fuels. Critics, however, warn that the immediate effect will be an increased burden on citizens already grappling with high living costs.

The new Act forms part of a broader package of reforms, which also includes the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Law and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, all geared toward strengthening revenue collection and fiscal transparency.
