I’m Safe but Still in Custody, Says Nnamdi Kalu lawyer

Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, has confirmed he remains in detention at the Kuje Prison, 24 hours after his arrest during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.

Ejimakor assured supporters of his safety on his status in a post on X (formerly Twitter) while expressing concerns about how his case was handled by the police.

The human rights lawyer wrote: “I am safe and sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The Magistrate refused to listen to our submissions. He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way”

Ejimakor also alleged that the authorities deliberately took his case to a particular court in Kuje instead of any of the other available Magistrate courts in the city.

For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje,” he stated.

Ejimakor was among those arrested on Monday during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, called on legal regulatory bodies in Nigeria to sanction Ejimakor for participating in the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.

According to Onanuga, Ejimakor’s participation in the protest undermines legal ethics, given that Kanu’s case is still before a competent court.

I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, among the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore,” Onanuga wrote.

I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest. As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court.”

Onanuga noted the prosecution had already concluded its case and that it was now the duty of Kanu’s legal team to focus on presenting a strong defence rather than engaging in public demonstrations.

Russian/Ukraine War: Trump and Putin meeting canceled

There are no plans for US President Donald Trump to meet with President Vladimir Putin of Russia in the immediate future, a White House official said on Tuesday, October 21, a pivot after Trump suggested last week that he would meet his Russian counterpart soon in Budapest to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump said last week that he planned on meeting with Putin after senior American and Russian officials spoke.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, then had a “productive call,” the official said.

Trump’s initial plan, stated just last week, was to speak with the Russian leader in about “two weeks or so” to discuss a path toward ending the war in Ukraine.

He even floated Budapest as the potential location for the meeting. This suggestion was a highly anticipated development, as a direct meeting between the two leaders would be seen as a major step toward de-escalation or a potential peace process.

It is unclear whether Trump and Putin are still discussing meeting in Budapest in the more distant future. Trump was unclear about a date for the meeting but indicated it would happen soon after senior officials from each country spoke.

The news that Trump will not meet with Putin in the immediate future, despite earlier suggestions, is a significant shift in diplomatic signals regarding the war in Ukraine.

JUST IN: NLC Threatens Nationwide Action if FG Fails to End ASUU Strike, Gives Deadline

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to join forces with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) if the Federal Government fails to conclude negotiations with unions in the tertiary education sector.

The decision was announced by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, during an interactive session with labour correspondents in Abuja, following a meeting between the NLC and leaders of tertiary institutions’ unions held at the Congress headquarters.

His statement, “We have decided to give the Federal Government four weeks to conclude all negotiations in this sector. They have started talks with ASUU, but the problems extend beyond ASUU,” Ajaero stated.

If after four weeks these negotiations are not concluded, the organs of the NEC will meet to decide on a nationwide action involving all workers and unions in the country, to ensure that lasting solutions are found.”

The NLC also criticised the Federal Government’s no-work-no-pay policy imposed on members of ASUU for embarking on strike, describing it as unjust and provocative.

The so-called policy of no work, no pay will henceforth be no pay, no work. You cannot benefit from an action you instigated. We have discovered that most strike actions in this country — up to 90% — are caused by the government’s failure to honour agreements,” Ajaero added.

Nigeria’s tertiary education system has been plagued by instability, with the ongoing ASUU strike leading to the closure of universities nationwide.

ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, had announced the strike during a press briefing at the University of Abuja on Sunday, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government on September 28. The union cited unresolved issues such as staff welfare, salary arrears, infrastructure decay, and the non-implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement.

Despite assurances from Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa that talks were nearing conclusion, with ₦50 billion released for earned allowances and ₦150 billion earmarked in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, ASUU rejected the measures as insufficient.

ASUU is demanding full implementation of the 2009 agreement, payment of three-and-a-half months of withheld salaries, sustainable university funding, protection against victimisation, settlement of outstanding promotions and arrears, and release of withheld cooperative and union deductions.

The NLC reaffirmed its solidarity with ASUU and other education unions, calling on the government to respect collective agreements and the rights of workers.

The Congress said the emergency meeting aims to determine the next steps for industrial action and devise strategies to protect the welfare of university staff and the stability of public tertiary education in Nigeria.

US Presidential Adviser Dismisses Claim of Christian Genocide in Nigeria

Senior Adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, has downplayed reports suggesting that Christians are being deliberately targeted in Nigeria.

Boulos made the statement during a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.

He dismissed what he described as “misleading claims” of a Christian genocide, saying the crisis in Nigeria goes beyond religion.

According to him, violence in parts of the country is driven by terrorism and insecurity, not faith.

ObasEmpire reports that his comment comes at a time when several U.S. lawmakers are urging Washington to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution.

Responding to questions on the matter, Boulos said, “Those who know the terrain well know that terrorism has no colour, no religion, and no tribe.”

He added that insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and ISIS have killed both Christians and Muslims.

People of all religions and all tribes are dying as a result of terrorist acts, but it’s very unfortunate,” he said.

We even know that Boko Haram and ISIS are killing more Muslims than Christians. People are suffering from all sorts of backgrounds. This is not specifically targeted about one group or the other.”

Boulos noted that conflicts between farmers and herders, especially in the Middle Belt, have claimed many lives, including those of Christian farmers, but stressed that the violence is not one-sided.

But definitely it’s not something that we can say is specifically targeted about a specific group,” he stated

He described Nigeria as a nation with diverse ethnic and religious identities that has coexisted peacefully for decades.Nigerian politics book

This has never been a serious religious issue and should not be,” Boulos added.

The U.S. adviser also commended the Tinubu administration for its ongoing efforts to strengthen national security, noting that sustained collaboration between both countries would help address terrorism and communal violence more effectively.

Recall that in recent months, several international rights groups and U.S. politicians have accused Nigerian authorities of turning a blind eye to alleged attacks on Christian communities, an issue that continues to draw global attention

Igbo union gives Lagos, Nigerian govt 30-day ultimatum over demolition of Igbo-owned properties

The group urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call the Lagos State Government, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other influential Yoruba figures to order, insisting that targeting the economic interests of the Igbo community in Lagos could have far-reaching consequences.

In a statement signed by its Administrative Secretary, Mazi Austin-Mary Ndukwu, the union warned that the ongoing demolitions, coupled with what it termed the indifference of federal authorities, could undermine national harmony and ignite ethnic tension if not urgently addressed.

The group urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call the Lagos State Government, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other influential Yoruba figures to order, insisting that targeting the economic interests of the Igbo community in Lagos could have far-reaching consequences.

According to INU-W, recent demolition exercises carried out by the state government have disproportionately affected businesses and properties owned by Igbo entrepreneurs, raising fears of ethnic bias.

The union accused the Lagos State Government of pursuing a “dangerous agenda” aimed at economically displacing Igbos and frustrating their contributions to Lagos’ growth.

I The recent wave of demolitions has caused anguish and despair among Ndigbo living in Lagos. These actions, carried out under various guises, are viewed as deliberate attempts to weaken our people economically.

The continued silence from the Federal Government and Yoruba leaders only emboldens this troubling trend,” the statement read in part.

INU-W called on President Tinubu to intervene and ensure the immediate cessation of what it called “lopsided and discriminatory demolitions,” stressing that Igbos are legitimate stakeholders in Lagos and have contributed immensely to its commercial and infrastructural development.

The group also issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government to engage in dialogue with affected property owners and reach an amicable settlement to prevent a possible escalation of hostilities

The Lagos State Government must retrace its steps and open genuine discussions with victims of these demolitions within 30 days. Failure to do so may compel us to take appropriate and lawful steps in defence of our people’s dignity and economic survival,” the statement added.

The Union also cautioned that no ethnic group holds a monopoly on peace or power, warning that sustained hostility against Igbos could provoke avoidable confrontation.

We remind the Yoruba nation that the Igbo have survived far worse challenges in history, including the economic blockade and deprivation during the civil war. We will not be driven out of Lagos unjustly, but if the situation persists, we are prepared to respond decisively,” it said.

Phyna reportedly assaulted over N200K dispute in Abuja hotel

Former Big Brother Naija winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, was reportedly involved in a heated altercation at a hotel in Abuja following an alleged N200,000 disagreement.

According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation began in the early hours of Tuesday inside Phyna’s hotel room in Abuja, before spilling into the lobby, attracting the attention of guests and staff.

Sources claimed the dispute stemmed from an unsettled financial issue involving N200,000, which quickly escalated into a shouting match.

The argument reportedly intensified when neither party was willing to back down, leading to pushing and chaos within the hotel premises.
