PHOTOS: VDM leads candle light procession in Anambra for slain ‘Fish Magnet

A social media influencer, Martins Otse, popularly known as “VeryDarkMan”,  on Tuesday, led a candlelight procession march in Awka, the Anambra State capital, for the slain businessman, Ifesinachi Onyekesi (popularly known as “Fish Magnet”).

Fish Magnet was recently kidnapped and murdered by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in the state.

Recall that the prominent fish dealer and Managing Director of Fish Magnet Outlet, was abducted at his residence in Ezinifite village, Okpuno, in Awka South Local Government Area of the state on Saturday, July 27.

The assailants shot him in the leg and forcefully whisked him away to an unknown destination, a journey he never returned alive.

The unfortunate incident and gruesome murder of Fish Magnet, who was an only son to an APGA women leader, attracted condemnation from good-spirited individuals and netizens, including “VeryDarkMan”, who publicly mourned his demise and organised a candlelight procession for him in Anambra.

VeryDarkMan, who mobilised hundreds of youths, and marched the streets of the Awka, starting from Aroma junction chantes songs that depicted anger against insecurity in the country.

The unfortunate incident and gruesome murder of Fish Magnet, who was an only son to an APGA women leader, attracted condemnation from good-spirited individuals and netizens, including “VeryDarkMan”, who publicly mourned his demise and organised a candlelight procession for him in Anambra.

Speaking during the procession, VDM criticised security breaches in Anambra and other parts of Nigeria, which he said, is as a result of failure on the part of security operatives.

It is sad that ‘Fish Magnet’ was kidnapped and later killed without any trace. Insecurity is not peculiar to Anambra. It is so in many parts of Nigeria. But the case of ‘Fish Magnet’ is too sad, because, the economy of Nigeria does not favour youths.

‘Fish Magnet’ was able to eke a living on his own, by setting up a peculiar business outfit that made him popular.

Sadly, this young man, who should be protected was gruesomely killed. This will discourage other youths that would ordinarily strive towards enterprise. This is sad, and should be condemned

VeryDarkMan further berated government at all levels, saying that they do not do enough to promote security of lives and property.

He pleaded with Anambra people, especially Awka residents to keep on patronising Fish Barbecue, owned by the Fish Magnet, so that the business will not die with the young owner.

Government is not doing enough to promote security the way it should. Killer herdsmen and terrorists in the bush carry weapons and bullets more powerful than those of the police. How could we survive in an environment like that?

“Government must be seen to be priotising security of lives and property of the people. Killings are much in our country, and we are not happy about it,” he added.

Tragedy in Anambra: “Fish Magnet” Entrepreneur Kidnapped and Killed by Gunmen

A chilling tragedy struck Anambra State over the weekend as Ifesinachi Martins Onyekere—better known as “Fish Magnet” on social media—was abducted and murdered in cold blood after an armed raid on his home in Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.

Gunmen in an ash‑coloured Lexus SUV stormed Onyekere’s residence in Ezinifite Village around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, shooting him in the leg and forcibly abducting him in his own navy‑blue Toyota Corolla. The attackers then escaped via bush paths toward Nawfia, evading local security forces.

Though reports suggest a ransom was paid for his release, Fish Magnet’s body was later discovered abandoned along a roadside in Awka on Wednesday, triggering widespread public outrage

Fish Magnet, a youthful and enterprising fish seller, had built a reputation for offering lower prices in the trade—earning admiration but also stirring envy. An old video resurfaced after his death in which he openly discussed resentment from colleagues in the industry, stating he “reduced the price for everybody” which stirred anger among fellow sellers.

The police spokesperson in Anambra, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the kidnapping and murder, saying the victim’s vehicle was recovered on Ukwulu/Igbariam Road by security operatives. The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered all investigative units to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Social media has erupted with grief and calls for justice. Social commentator Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), wept publicly over Fish Magnet’s death and vowed to visit Anambra on August 4 for a candlelight procession through the fish market to raise awareness about the growing insecurity in the region.

The slain entrepreneur was the only child of his mother, who also serves as a women’s leader in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State—a connection that has amplified public interest and concern over the incident.

This incident has reignited fears about worsening insecurity in southeastern Nigeria, where kidnappings and armed attacks have become grimly frequent—often targeting young entrepreneurs and traders. Public pressure is mounting on authorities to act swiftly and prevent further loss of promising lives.

BREAKING: Gunmen strike again, kill 14 passengers on their way from Plateau market

It was another dark day on Thursday, July 24, 2025, after gunmen suspected to be Fulani bandits ambushed a vehicle coming back from the popular Bokkos market in Plateau State, killing 14 passengers, including women and babies.

Eyewitnesses who narrated the incident to ObasEmpire the victims were on their way home from the weekly market after they had conducted their businesses when they were attacked and killed along Chirang Road in Mangor District of the LGA.

One of the eyewitnesses, who did not want his name mentioned, said the heavily armed men blocked the road when the vehicle approached and opened fire sporadically, killing the victims and injuring many others.

Chairman of the Bokkos Cultural Development Forum (BCDF), Farmasum Fuddang, who also confirmed the incident in a statement seen by ObasEmpire Friday, said it was shocking that despite several peace and reconciliation meetings and efforts to broker peace between farming and herding communities in the council, some bandits would still go ahead to kill innocent people.

The victims were returning from the weekly market in Bokkos town when their vehicle was ambushed. Victims included women and little babies,” Fuddang said in the statement.

This violence occurs despite various so-called peace and reconciliation efforts,” the chairman said.

Fuddang, who did not mince words in accusing Fulani militias of launching the attack, said the fact was clear that they were the culprits, insisting that their goal is to take control of the entire local government area, which is recognized as the potato headquarters of Nigeria.

NAFDAC uncovers N1bn fake chemicals and food syndicate in Lagos

Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has uncovered an illegal operation involving the sale of fake chemicals, expired food flavours, unauthorised fertilisers, and repackaged pharmaceutical raw materials worth over N1 billion in the Alapere area of Ketu, Lagos State.

NAFDAC disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

The agency said that three suspects were arrested while three warehouses filled with dangerous substances were sealed during the operation recently.

Director of Investigation and Enforcement at NAFDAC, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, who spoke during the raid, said the exercise followed credible intelligence about a criminal network engaged in large-scale food and chemical counterfeiting.

According to him, the suspects were repackaging expired chemicals redirected for the use of food and drug production.

This is one of the campaigns our agency is carrying out to protect the health of Nigerians.

Chemicals are either precursors for other materials or are directly used in the production of consumable goods. Using expired chemicals means that the final product cannot be safe or effective. That is a serious health risk,” Iluyomade said

On his part, Director of Chemical Evaluation and Research at NAFDAC, Dr. Leonard Omokpariola, gave a detailed list of the dangerous items recovered from the site, including food flavouring, beef, chicken, tiger nuts, and others.

We found expired food flavourings, roasted beef, roasted chicken, Chinook, tiger nut, and also active pharmaceutical ingredients like metronidazole benzoate,” he said.

Police Resuce Kidnapped Child, arrest Suspects in Multiple Raid

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the rescue of a kidnapped four-year-old girl, the arrest of a fake kidnapping gang, and the recovery of counterfeit currency from suspected fraudsters.

According to a statement released on Saturday on X by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the developments were part of ongoing efforts to bolster internal security and dismantle criminal networks through intelligence-led policing.

In Katsina State, operatives of the Command acting on a complaint received on February 20, 2025, from one Alhaji Badamasi Bala of Madaci Yan Nono Quarters have cracked a disturbing case of kidnapping involving a 14-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister.

All suspects have been arrested, and the 4-year-old sister have been rescued unhurt,” the statement said.

In Nasarawa State, police operatives intercepted an unregistered motorcycle along the Giza–Kadarko Road in Keana Local Government Area, following a tip-off about a suspected arms trafficker.

The suspect fled into a nearby bush upon sighting officers.

A search of the abandoned vehicle yielded an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and forty-five rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition.

Efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspect are ongoing.

“Similarly, on June 13, 2025, a joint team comprising operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies acting on credible intelligence, conducted a coordinated raid at Kankare and Zurkuda villages in Birnin Kudu LGA, Jigawa State.
