Obi Has Massive Support Nationwide, We’ll Be Glad If He Returns to PDP – Ulasi

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Ulasi, has said the party would gladly welcome Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi back to its fold ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, Ulasi maintained that Obi’s credibility and popularity would significantly boost the PDP’s chances.

I’ll be happy if he joins PDP because he will bring his credibility to bear on the party as we are reorganising.

Any party that has him today will know they already have more than 30 to 40 percent of the election because he has tremendous support across this country,” he said.

Ulasi, however, observed that Obi’s political future remained unclear.

To the best of my knowledge, Peter Obi has no platform. He ran last time with Labour Party, he has attended the launching of ADC. I don’t know what his platform will be,” he added.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State (2006–2014), previously ran as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019.

He defected from the party in May 2022 after withdrawing from its presidential primary and subsequently emerged as the Labour Party’s flag bearer.

His 2023 campaign, powered by the “Obidient Movement,” attracted massive youth support and disrupted the traditional two-party race, with Obi finishing third behind Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

If I Wanted Third Term, I Would Have Got It’ – Says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed long-standing allegations that he once sought to extend his stay in office beyond the constitutional two terms.

ObasEmpire recalls that Obasanjo led Nigeria between 1999 and 2007.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Democracy Dialogue of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, Obasanjo said no living or dead Nigerian can produce evidence that he ever pushed for a third term

He declared, “I think I’m not a fool. If I wanted it, some thought I wanted it, I know how to go about it. And there is no Nigerian, dead or alive, that will say I called him and told him I wanted the third term. None.”

The former president argued that if he could secure debt relief for Nigeria, which he described as a far more difficult achievement, then obtaining a third term would have been within his reach had he truly pursued it.

I keep telling them that, look, if I wanted to get debt relief, which is more difficult than getting a third term and I got it, if I wanted a third term, I would have got it too,” he said.

During Obasanjo’s tenure, Nigeria secured an $18 billion debt relief package from the Paris Club in 2005, widely regarded as one of the defining achievements of his administration.

Obasanjo also warned against leaders who see themselves as indispensable, describing such a mindset as a “sin against God.”

Some people believe that unless they are there, nobody else. They will even tell you that they haven’t got anybody else. I believe that that is a sin against God, because if God takes you away, which God can do anytime, then somebody else will come, and that somebody else may do better or may do worse,” Obasanjo said.

The 87-year-old elder statesman stressed that the best of leadership is achieved when leaders are young, vibrant, and dynamic.

I know that the best is done when you are young, ideal, vibrant, and dynamic. When you are ‘kuje kuje’ (weak or frail), you don’t have the best,” he said.

Obasemprire reports that Obasanjo’s comments come amid ongoing debates across Africa about sit-tight leaders and constitutional manipulation to extend presidential terms.

Six more death Confirmed in Afriland Towers Fire

At least six additional deaths have been confirmed following the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

The victims were employees of United Capital, a financial and investment services firm occupying the 3rd and 4th floors of the tower.

The confirmation comes just hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) announced that four of its staff members also died in the incident on Wednesday evening.

ObasEmpire reported that the fire, which reportedly started in the inverter room in the basement around 1:30 pm on Tuesday, sent thick smoke into the air and triggered panic among occupants. Some individuals were seen attempting to escape through windows as emergency responders battled the flames.

Officials of the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders rescued at least nine persons from the building. Five were revived, while four remained unconscious.

A total of nine victims have been rescued. Five individuals have been resuscitated. Several others escaped unhurt, while efforts are ongoing to revive the remaining four,” the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement on Tuesday, raising concerns about possible casualties.

In an exclusive statement shared with our correspondent on Thursday morning, United Capital confirmed it lost six members of staff to the tragedy. This takes the confirmed number of deaths from the Afriland Towers fire tragedy to 10.

“It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void. We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as provide all the support we can to them during this most difficult time.

We are making preparations for an appropriate memorial service to honour their lives and mark their passing with dignity and solemnity. We thank the emergency services and all those who responded for their valiant assistance at the time of the incident.

In this moment of untold grief, we stand together in solidarity, drawing strength from one another as we navigate this period. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” the company said.

Emergency responders had earlier confirmed rescuing several occupants after the fire, which was believed to have been triggered by an inverter explosion. While officials have yet to release an official casualty figure, eyewitnesses and internal company sources insist that “not everyone made it out alive.”

Attempts to reach the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency for confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Labour Party asks Senate to reinstate Senator Natasha, warns against abuse of law

The Labour Party (LP) has demanded the immediate reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, following the expiration of her six-month suspension.

The call was contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by LP’s national publicity secretary, Tony Akeni.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended in March. In a letter dated August 28, she notified the National Assembly of her intention to resume on September 4, which she said marked the end of the suspension.

But in a response dated September 4, the acting clerk of the National Assembly said the suspension remained in force pending the outcome of her appeal before the Court of Appeal.

Reacting, LP said it had been informed of the position of a US diplomat on the face-off between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Kogi senator.

The party noted that the diplomat shared a letter written by Fatoumatta Njai, a Gambian lawmaker and member of the Pan-African Parliament, condemning the Senate’s defiance of a subsisting court order that nullified Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension.

In the view of the American diplomat, the ‘abuse of the rule of law by the Nigerian senate against a subsisting court judgment which, since July 4, 2025, nullified the suspension of Senator Natasha and implicitly ordered her unhindered return to the senate, is shameful for your country’,” LP quoted.

Njai, in her letter dated September 9, urged the Nigerian Senate to “immediately reinstate” Akpoti-Uduaghan, warning that defiance of court orders undermines democracy in West Africa.

BREAKING: NUPENG Exposes Dangote’s Real Motive Behind Free Petrol Distribution

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has accused Dangote Petroleum Refinery of disguising an anti-union and monopolistic agenda under the cover of a planned free petrol distribution scheme.

In a statement on Friday signed by National Executive President, Comrade Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, NUPENG alleged that the move by the refinery to deliver free fuel to selected states was a “Greek gift” designed to cripple union activities and eliminate competition in the petroleum trucking sector.

The union’s accusations came after the Dangote Group dismissed claims of anti-labour practices, monopoly tendencies, and planned fuel price hikes. The refinery insisted that allegations it barred tanker drivers from joining NUPENG were “entirely unfounded.”The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has accused Dangote Petroleum Refinery of disguising an anti-union and monopolistic agenda under the cover of a planned free petrol distribution scheme.

Earlier in the week, NUPENG had shut down depots, protesting that the refinery had prevented newly recruited drivers of its 4,000 compressed natural gas-powered trucks from joining the union.

The issue was eventually addressed on Tuesday with the government mediating.

However, the union’s National President, Williams Akporeha, on Wednesday said Dangote violated an agreement signed at the office of the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to NUPENG, drivers were allegedly instructed to remove union stickers from their trucks and compelled to load products in defiance of established rules.

Meanwhile, Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced on Thursday night that its free petrol distribution scheme will commence on Monday, beginning in the South-West, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Delta, Rivers, and Edo States. It also slashed pump prices to ₦841 per litre in Lagos and the South-West, and ₦851 in Abuja, Kwara, Edo, Rivers, and Delta.

The union further cautioned that any harm to its leaders would be blamed on what it described as “desperate and destructive capitalists with filthy wealth.”

Nigerians should not be deceived by the offer of free nationwide delivery of petroleum products to dispensing stations,” NUPENG warned. “It is a Greek gift meant to wipe out competition and crush our union.”

The statement also alleged that Dangote Group has consistently denied unionisation rights across its cement and sugar operations nationwide.
