Photos:Heavy Security as Lagos Govt demolishes Over 19 buildings at Tade fair plaza

Over 19 buildings were on Thursday pulled down at the New Mandela Plaza, within the popular Trade Fair Complex in Lagos, as the state government moved in with a heavy security presence to carry out a massive demolition exercise

At the time of filing this report, selective buildings inside the plaza were already reduced to rubble, sparking outrage from shop owners who claimed they were not served prior notice.

A visibly agitated plaza owner, who arrived while his shop was being pulled down, screamed from his car that no notice was served before the bulldozers moved in. Some sales representatives lamented that their bosses’ goods, still locked up inside the shops, were destroyed alongside the buildings.

When contacted to clarify the role of the Task Force, its Chairman said the operation did not originate from his office. He explained: “Sometimes, security agencies in the state seek the backup of the Task Force to secure the environment. That does not mean they initiated the process. However, if such reports come to my table, I will let you know.”

As at press time, there was no official statement from the Lagos State Government on the demolition, but security operatives remained on ground to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

Just In: Lagos Police Arraign Notorious Assassin, Olori Eso

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has disclosed that it has arraigned one of the most notorious hired assassin in Lagos, Wasiu Akinwande, popularly known as Olori Eso.

Obasemprire reports that this was made known in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.

Hundeyin wrote: “Wasiu Akinwande aka Olori Eso is currently being arraigned at the Ogba Magistrate Court on an eleven-count charge.”

Obasemprire recalls that Akinwande, 44, described by the police as “the most wanted vicious and notorious hired killer in Lagos,” was arrested in July following a covert tactical operation codenamed ‘Silence, Speed and Surprise’ executed by the Command’s Tactical Squad.

He was apprehended during a coordinated tactical operation code-named ‘Silence, Speed and Surprise’ carried out by the Command’s Tactical Squad in his hideout in the Agbado area of Ogun State.

Akinwande is accused of being the leader of a deadly gang responsible for over a decade of violent crimes, including murder, armed robbery, cult-related killings, and kidnappings, especially in the Mushin axis of Lagos State.

He was apprehended during a coordinated tactical operation code-named ‘Silence, Speed and Surprise’ carried out by the Command’s Tactical Squad in his hideout in the Agbado area of Ogun State.

Benjamin Hundeyin had said Akinwande who is known for terrorising Mushin and surrounding areas was trailed to Ogun after efforts to nab him were unsuccessful.

Arrest of most wanted vicious and notorious hired killer and head of killers gang in the history of Lagos State in recent time, Wasiu Akinwade a.k.a. Olori Eso, and recovery of nine (9) sophisticated firearms, ammunition, magazines, dagger, walkie-talkies and international passports,” the statement partly read.

The suspect is accused of leading several deadly gangs responsible for over a decade of violent crimes including armed robbery, murder, cult-related killings, and kidnappings.

Hundeyin had disclosed, “This serial killer suspect is the most wanted suspect in Lagos history in recent time.

His arrest marks a huge success in the ongoing fight against violent crimes that are threats to security and safety of residents in Mushin and some other parts of Lagos State.”

According to the statement, the police recovered a large cache of weapons and incriminating items from Akinwande’s residence, which the suspect “freely admitted he was using for his killing operations with his gang.”

Obi’s N650m donation spark political firestorm

A fresh political storm is brewing against former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, following revelations that he has donated over N650m to educational and humanitarian causes across 11 states since the beginning of the year.

The donations, which the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate disclosed in separate updates on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, cut across Anambra, Ebonyi, Cross River, Enugu, Kaduna, Edo, Borno, Abuja, Abia, Plateau, and Imo states.

According to him, the gestures reflect his commitment to human capital development and social welfare.

We must continue to support our health and educational institutions and poverty alleviation if we are to build a strong and sustainable nation for our future leaders,” Obi wrote in a post.

However, the National Vice Chairman (South-East) of the All Progressives Congress, Ijeomah Arodiogbu, described the acts as “politically desperate.”

In an interview on Saturday, Arodiogbu claimed Obi’s outreach was not borne out of genuine compassion, stating that it was part of a calculated move to regain relevance ahead of the 2027 polls.

Peter Obi has not stopped showing his level of desperation and our people are aware of that. Our people know that he’s just being desperate.

When did it become Obi’s habit to share money? That’s his inconsistency of character. We’re not bothered,” he said.

Arodiogbu also accused Obi of failing to support young people in his community, describing him as a “stingy man” pretending to care.

The APC Vice Chair said, “In our communities, when a master finishes with an apprentice, he settles him to start his own business. Obi is the kind of master who doesn’t settle his boys. Nobody wants to identify with such a man.

Anybody that cannot build with the people around him, and is only considering himself, can never be a good leader. Whatever he’s doing now is a cheap one, a very cheap one.”

Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, said Obi had always been committed to humanitarian causes, even before venturing into politics.

However, in a swift response, the Obidient Movement blasted Arodiogbu, describing his comments as misleading and politically motivated.

Obi has been doing humanitarian activities even before he became a governor. He went and supported Haiti when there was a devastating earthquake. That’s even outside the country,” Tanko stated.

He insisted that Obi’s outreach efforts were not a product of desperation but an extension of his values and longstanding commitment to people-focused initiatives.

This is his natural self. He’s not doing them because of politics. He has been doing that for the interest of the people,” he added.

Tanko further asked Arodiogbu and the APC to focus on nation-building by complimenting Obi’s humanitarian moves instead of attacking them.

The truth about it is that, why is he concerned about Peter Obi? He should be concerned about the presidency.

Let them be concerned about what they are doing to the people. If they are doing good, they should be saying it.”

Tanko added that the movement was not out to fight anyone but to hold the government accountable, particularly on public spending and rising debt.

We are only dealing with the issues. We’ve made the public notice about their spending and their borrowing. Therefore, any attempt or any attack, we welcome it in good stride. Let them bring us an alternative solution to what they are doing, or what we are doing,” he said.

Also weighing in, Obi’s ally and National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Peter Ameh, strongly condemned efforts to politicise the donations.

.It is both unfortunate and disappointing that the APC National Vice Chairman South-East would attempt to politicise the genuine humanitarian efforts of Obi.

“These efforts, rooted in empathy, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of Nigerians and beyond, have been a hallmark of his character long before and far beyond election seasons,” Ameh said.

He added that Obi’s history of philanthropy, spanning decades and continents, reflected a deep-seated dedication to uplifting humanity, not a quest for political gain.

He also recalled that Obi had engaged in refugee work in war-torn regions like Afghanistan and Rwanda before becoming governor of Anambra State in 2006, describing it as a consistent pattern of humanitarian service.

Senate President Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi In Shouting Match During Heated Exchange, Nearly Come To Blows – Report

The Nigerian Senate witnessed a dramatic altercation on Wednesday evening as a closed-door session descended into chaos, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele engaging in a shouting match that nearly escalated into a physical confrontation.

The tension erupted during an executive session convened to deliberate on whether to adjourn the current legislative sitting this week or next week for the Senate’s traditional two-month annual recess. Sources told ObasEmpire that the disagreements among the leadership over the adjournment plan led to visible cracks within the chamber’s top hierarchy.

It was learnt that Senator Ali Ndume, in a pointed observation, criticised the Senate leadership for failing to hold a prior meeting to unify their position before bringing the matter to the floor.

He reportedly said that was not how things should be done, urging the leadership to show greater coordination.

Ndume’s comment appeared to ignite long-simmering frustrations, as Senate Leader Bamidele publicly voiced his displeasure with Senate President Akpabio’s leadership style.

“I am frustrated as Senate Leader working under Senate President Akpabio,” Bamidele reportedly said in the heated session. “He does not call leadership meetings, he doesn’t consult with anyone. He is autocratic. In fact, I am contemplating resigning as Senate Leader.”

Akpabio, visibly angered by Bamidele’s remarks, fired back sharply.

Senator Opeyemi should sit down! He cannot speak while I am speaking. I am in charge here,” Akpabio reportedly yelled. “I have served as Commissioner, two-term Governor, Senate Minority Leader, and a powerful Minister. I know the Senate rules and leadership more than you.”

ObasEmpire learnt that Senate President Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi In Shouting Match During Heated Exchange, Nearly Come To Blows – Reporte that as tempers flared, both men appeared ready to confront each other physically before other senators quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation and restore order.

No official statement had been issued as of the time of filing this report.

Efforts to reach the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, were unsuccessful, as his phone line was unreachable and he was also offline on WhatsApp.

Similar Altercation Report Dismissed In 2024

Reports of a similar altercation between the two Senate leaders also surfaced in November 2024, but were later dismissed as fake news.

At the time, the Office of the Senate Leader, led by Senator Bamidele, debunked reports of an alleged altercation and physical fight between him and the Senate President, Akpabio.

The report was earlier circulated on the X social media platform by a journalist, Jackson Ude.

However, the Senate Leader’s Office dismissed it as fake news aimed at tarnishing the image of the Senate leadership.

In a statement issued by the Directorate of Media and Public Affairs of the Senate Leader’s Office, it was clarified that Senator Bamidele had never engaged in physical assault in his over two decades of political career, including his time as President of the National Association of Nigerian Students.(ObasEmpire)

BRICS: Tinubu Raises Alarm Over Environmental Degradation, Climate Crisis

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for a reevaluation of the current global governance structure and the financial and healthcare systems.

ObasEmpire reports that the Nigerian President stated this at the 17th meeting of the Global South and the Emerging Economies bloc, BRICS, on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil

Tinubu urged greater equity and inclusion for low-income and emerging economies, particularly in Africa.

This was disclosed in a statement released by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The President stated that environmental degradation, the climate crisis, and healthcare inequalities should receive more attention, as they contribute to slowing growth and development.

Tinubu, invited to the summit by Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, stated that Nigeria supports the BRICS position on the need to focus on collective, fair, and equitable global development.

Nigeria became the ninth partner country of BRICS in January 2025, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. The 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024 created the partner-country category.

President Tinubu said, “Nigeria, therefore, associates with what I have heard today and all that has happened in BRICS. The next issues are financial restructuring and reevaluation of the global structure.”

He noted that environmental degradation, climate crisis, and global healthcare inequalities were shared concerns pertinent to Africa.

Africa has contributed the least to global emissions but suffers the most,” he added.

Tinubu emphasised the need for a new path of justice, anchored in fairness, sustainable technology transfer, and accessible financing, so that emerging economies can fully benefit from various initiatives.

The African continent is creating the path through the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall. We believe that COP-30 will strengthen our resolve to adopt a strategic approach to achieving a healthy global environment.

Nigeria strongly believes in South-South cooperation. We can, therefore, not be passive participants in global decision-making on financial restructuring, debt forgiveness, climate change, environmental issues, and healthcare.

We must be the architects of a future that addresses the specific needs and concerns of youths, who represent 70 per cent of our population in Nigeria. Therefore, Nigeria remains guided by our long-term vision, 2050, and nationally determined contribution.

We are taking bold steps to accelerate renewable energy adoption, mainstream climate action, promote nature-based solutions, strengthen urban resilience, champion South-South cooperation, align with the global renewal framework and achieve universal health coverage for all,” the President stated.

Tinubu also said that addressing non-communicable diseases must remain a collective health concern.

As we approach COP-30 and look to strengthen the global health system, we believe the BRICS must not only be a bloc for emerging economies but also a beacon for emerging solutions and resolutions rooted in solidarity, self-reliance, sustainability, and shared prosperity of a common future.

Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to strategic collaboration that translates into sustainable and inclusive development for all,” he noted.

In exercising its pro tempore presidency of BRICS, the Brazilian government announced Nigeria’s formal admission as a partner country on January 17, 2025.

As the world’s sixth-most populous country and one of Africa’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other BRICS members

Lagos Indigenes: Igbos Not Our Issue; Outsider Yorubas We Reject

Obasempire reports that a collective of native Lagosians, operating under the De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, has announced that while they have no issues with Igbo residents, they do oppose Yoruba individuals from other Southwest states attempting to seize Lagos unfairly.

The President of the group, Miftah Bolaji Are, conveyed this message during a visit to Ikorodu on Tuesday.

Are emphasized that the state’s natives would no longer endure those who exploit them under the pretense of being locals.

“We have no problem with Igbo. It is the South Westerners that are our problem. I have asked them, if you say Igbo want to take over Lagos, are the Igbo the ones who take people’s land and award the same to themselves? Are they Igbo who approve C-of-Os for those lands given out to other non-indigenes? So, I told them that they cannot send Igbo packing because Igbo are not our problem but the South Westerners who want to capture Lagos unjustiably,” he was quoted as saying by Vanguard.

An ex- Minister of Communications, Maj. Gen. Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd), who also spoke at the meeting decried that most of the key political offices in Lagos are often held by non-indigenes.

He lamented that some non-indigenes hold double indigeneship and use Lagos as stepping stones, describing it as betrayal.

Olanrewaju said: “The objective of resident non-indigenes is to capture Lagos State, politically and deny the indigenous people their constitutional rights and privileges. How do you explain the situations when the holders of six important political offices, most often, are held by non-indigenes?

“The ruling elite and leadership in Lagos State government, by holding on to the most important political positions, control the political administration and the state’s resources, and use the state to climb the political ladders at the expense of the indigenes.

“Important decisions, political selection and constitutional entitlements are allocated on this basis of inequality and self interests. We can give examples of non-indigenes, who proudly hold double indigeneship and use Lagos State as stepping stones. How do they achieve it? They achieve it through false declaration because they are never confirmed to be known by families they claimed to come from in Lagos State.”

Continuing, Olanrewaju said: “It is a betrayal, wrongful representation and lack of respect for Lagos State indigenes when the contesting parties nominate candidates who have two states of origin for the state. This attitude of deliberate imposition makes it possible for Senator Solomon Adeola a.k.a. Omo West/Yayi to use Lagos slot to the Senate at the National Assembly. He is currently representing Ogun State (West) in the Senate. This is unhealthy.

“The state deserves a full-time Minister as expressed in the Constitution and not a Minister of State that we have. De Renaissance Patriots Foundation is not against these appointees in their personal capacity, but we feel we should point out the serious flaws that deny the state indigenes of their rights and privileges.”
