Atiku Criticizes Lawmakers For Reducing Salaries Instead Of Allowances

Obasempire reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the House of Representatives members for their decision to reduce their salaries by 50 percent for six months.

This development followed the approval on Thursday of an amendment to a motion proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu. The amendment requires lawmakers to forgo 50% of their N600,000 monthly salaries to aid Nigerians.

The salary reduction is intended to support the federal government’s efforts to tackle the increasing cost of foodstuffs and ease the hardship faced by Nigerians.

The motion was approved and assigned to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for implementation.

With each member contributing N300,000 to a collective fund, the legislative body will provide N108 million monthly to the Federal Government, totaling N648 million over six months.

However, Atiku Abubakar criticized this decision on X, suggesting that lawmakers should cut their allowances rather than their salaries.

The incident, captured in a video circulating on TikTok today, July 18, 2024, has ignited a debate on social media about the escalating cost of staple foods in Nigeria.

In the viral video, one woman expressed frustration over the high inflation affecting food prices, asserting that Nigerians are suffering due to these exorbitant costs. She urged market vendors to show empathy towards consumers’ financial struggles and reconsider their pricing strategies.

However, not all market traders shared this sentiment. Some accused the woman of undercutting their prices, thereby jeopardizing their livelihoods.

They argued that maintaining higher prices was necessary to sustain their businesses amidst economic challenges.

The video’s circulation on TikTok sparked widespread reaction across Nigeria, with users expressing a range of emotions.

Many voiced disgust at the situation unfolding in Ilorin, a city often heralded for its economic vibrancy and cultural richness. Some commentators pointed fingers at Nigerians themselves, suggesting that internal factors were exacerbating the hardships faced by the populace.

The prosecution, led by Deputy Director in the Ministry of Justice Mrs. Paula Akpoguma, presented five witnesses to support the case.

The court held that the testimony of the five witnesses proved the case against the two defendants beyond reasonable doubt.

The prosecution stated that tragedy struck the family of Olise Agwunobi of Oko-Ogbele Community on March 5, 2020, when their seven-year-old twin boys were lured by the defendants to a bush and they proceeded to cut off their penis, eyes, tongues and hands which they hurriedly took to a native doctor at Aguleri in Anambra State.

“One of the defendants had earlier gone to the school of the twin children to take them but was turned down by the school teacher, one Mrs Emelda Ezekwude,” she said.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Marshal-Umukoro stated that after carefully evaluating the evidence presented before him, the prosecution had discharged the burden of proof as the first defendant from his confessional statement was the person who sowed the seed of committing human rituals in the mind of the second defendant by giving the phone number of one Chukwudi Edemuzor who was alleged to be searching for twins to kill for money.

The court maintained that the law is settled that the testimony of an investigating police officer was not hearsay evidence, and the court can rely on it.

Speaking with journalists after the judgment on Tuesday, the prosecuting counsel, Akpoguma thanked the court for upholding the cause of justice, “reaffirming that the judicial system works.”

Kumuyi encouraged his followers to disregard such false reports and to adhere to the truth of God’s word.

In his word: “You must have read that I relocated to the UK. “Did I relocate?” he asked. “I did not relocate anywhere. But because I went for crusade and conference and the conference and crusade is not being transmitted here, we do it over there.

We have a time difference. Some countries I go to like the one I went to in May have about 7 hours of time difference. When it is 7 am here it will be 2 am in that other country. There is no way I could transmit that here because of the time difference.

“It was a long trip and after that long trip, I jumped into the plane and went here and there. After those trips, I needed a few days to rest so that I would not come back weary, tired, and could not preach again. So I waited. And because I spent that time, they told you that I have relocated. ”

Kumuyi also recalled how someone wrote a letter to him and addressed the letter to the UK branch of the church because he said “he heard that I have relocated.”

The member according to Kumuyi wrote, “I am writing this to you. I need prayers. I need counseling. But I heard you are now based in London.”
