JUST IN: PDP Explains Delay in Punishing Wike, Others Over Anti-Party Activities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained why it has yet to sanction the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, and other chieftains accused of anti-party activities during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the party was committed to resolving its internal challenges through democratic processes rather than authoritarian action.

This is not a command structure. The PDP is not a one-man party. Different views and contestations exist, and the responsibility of leadership is to bring these together. We are handling issues methodically and in line with democratic principles,” Ologunagba said.

He noted that the party had prioritised reconciliation in the aftermath of the 2023 polls but was now at the stage of enforcing discipline. According to him, membership of the PDP comes with constitutional obligations, and those who defy them must face consequences.

Reprimands have been issued, and we expect compliance. The time has come for every member to roll up their sleeves and work for the party. We want to look forward, not backward,” he added.

Ologunagba further disclosed that preparations for the party’s elective National Convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, were being carried out with strict adherence to due process. “Every organ and stakeholder of the party has been informed and invited,” he stressed.

Wike and his allies, popularly known as the G-5 governors, had opposed the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and openly campaigned for rival parties.

Wike finally reveals conditions for peace in PDP

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has given final conditions that will make peace return to the Peoples Democratic Party.

The Minister insisted that the South-South zonal congress of the party must stand.

Wike stated this on Monday while fielding questions during his monthly media parley in Abuja.

According to the Minister, the Court allowed for the congress to hold, saying there’s nothing a person could do about it.

He said: “Our South-South zonal congress that was held must be upheld. There’s no doubt, no two words about it.

Now, when we were doing our South-South congress, the Acting National Chairman claimed that the PDP governors were not in support of the National Congress. Where are the PDP governors now? Our congress was held in Calabar and there’s nothing anybody can tell us.”

If they want another round of passes, so be it. Our congress held and Chief Daniel Orbi emerged as the National Vice Chairman of the congress. And the Court allowed for the congress to hold.”

BREAKING: Supreme Court Upholds Okpebholo’s Victory in Edo Guber Election

The Supreme Court has affirmed the 2024 governorship election victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

In a unanimous decision by a five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba, the apex court ruled that the appeal lacked merit. It upheld the earlier judgments of the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had both declared Okpebholo the validly elected governor.

The court held that Ighodalo and the PDP failed to present credible and admissible evidence to support claims of irregularities, including allegations of over-voting and substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

Many of the documents presented, the court noted, were merely “dumped” on the tribunal without proper linkage to the allegations in 432 out of the 4,519 polling units.

Ighodalo had approached the apex court after the Court of Appeal, in its May 29 ruling, affirmed the tribunal’s dismissal of his petition. He argued that the lower courts failed to properly evaluate the evidence, and insisted that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act.

The PDP and its candidate had earlier contended before the tribunal that INEC failed to pre-record some sensitive materials and that results were allegedly manipulated in 765 polling units. They called 19 witnesses and tendered 153 BVAS machines used in 133 polling units, but the tribunal ruled that they failed to substantiate their claims.

INEC had declared that Governor Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ighodalo, who secured 247,655 votes.
