Concerns as CBN quietly pulls down E-Naira Digital Currency

Four years after its high-profile unveiling, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) digital currency, the eNaira, has quietly slipped offline, leaving the project in limbo.

The Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), introduced in October 2021 by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, was promoted as a revolutionary tool to modernize Nigeria’s financial system, enhance cross-border payments, and strengthen the cashless economy.

At the launch, Buhari announced that the apex bank had already minted N500 million worth of eNaira, while 33 commercial banks were integrated into the system. “N500 million has been successfully minted by the Bank, N200 million has been issued to financial institutions, over 2,000 customers have been onboarded and over 120 merchants have successfully registered on the eNaira platform,” he said at the time.

The CBN projected that the initiative could raise Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by as much as $29 billion by 2031. Officials also emphasized that the platform would evolve through continuous upgrades. “Given that the eNaira is a journey, its unveiling marks only the first step. This journey will continue with a series of modifications, new capabilities, and enhancements to the platform,” the bank noted.

However, recent checks revealed that the digital currency is effectively unavailable. The original wallet portal, once accessible via www.enaira.gov.ng, now returns a “404 Website not found” error, pointing to an inactive application on Microsoft’s Azure platform.

According to FIJ, a search for the eNaira Speed Wallet app on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store also showed that it has been taken down.

The disappearance of the wallet and app has raised fresh questions about the fate of the ambitious project, which was once hailed as one of the first government-backed digital currencies in the world.

At the start, the CBN promised to collaborate with private partners to ensure inclusivity, particularly for rural communities and the unbanked population. “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has committed to working with relevant partners to ensure a seamless process that benefits all users, particularly those in rural areas and the unbanked population,” it stated during the launch phase.

Today, however, with the official platforms offline and no formal communication on the project’s status, Nigeria’s digital currency experiment appears stalled—leaving citizens and observers to wonder whether the eNaira will be revived or quietly phased out.

I Hope You Have Learnt Your Lessons – Blessing CEO Taunts Phyna Over Sister’s Death

Relationship and lifestyle coach Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO, has criticized reality star Phyna over her clash with activist VeryDarkMan (VDM).

ObasEmpire that in a video posted on Sunday, Blessing CEO said she sympathised with Phyna’s loss but faulted the way she handled her disagreement with VDM, insisting that it showed ingratitude despite his earlier support.

She argued that Phyna could have turned to other activists or platforms instead of attacking VDM and aligning with his rival, Izzy Ogbeide.

Blessing CEO also accused the Big Brother Naija winner of allowing her sister’s health crisis to become online content, stressing that activists are human and deserve appreciation.

She maintained that Phyna’s criticism of VDM while still expecting his assistance was contradictory and avoidable.

Phyna, I am sorry for the loss of your sister, but I need you to grab some lessons. Do not let your anger take the better part of you. Briddle your tongue, especially when you are in critical situations.. you will be careful because the devil is just looking for a small opportunity to nail you to the wall. This is not a case of you and VeryDarMan, this is a case of common gratitude. I am not a fan of VDM, but trust me, you see that thing that you did and that thing that you said, no matter how people want to applaud you, it is enough to work against you. And I am going to use this opportunity to beg you, if you feel like somebody is too controversial, leave them alone.

You could have used Harrison, Daddy Freeze or Brekete when you knew you didn’t want to use VDM. In a bid to spite VDM, you went to Izzy Ogbeide and you said a lot of things. Izzy used you as bait to fight VDM.

They turned your sister’s case into content creation. Activists are human beings too. When people are ungrateful, it kills your energy. Gratitude has a way of standing you tall. If someone has been kind to you before, even if the person offends you, just keep quiet.

You put out disgusting statements about VDM and still expected him to help you? Let us learn to be grateful,” Blessing CEO said

ObasEmpire reports that Ruth Otabor, Phyna’s younger sister, was hit by a Dangote truck in Auchi on August 13, 2025.

She suffered severe injuries, including an amputation, and was placed on life support before passing away on Sunday.

Just In: Ex-AGF malami’s Convoy attacked

A convoy of the African Democratic Congress leader in Kebbi State and former Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, came under attack by suspected political thugs in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly after Malami’s return to the state, while he was on a condolence visit to several families in the metropolis.

Witnesses said about 10 vehicles in the convoy were vandalised, while several of his supporters sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Malami, who served as Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice between 2015 and 2023, described the attack as politically motivated.

“I was in Birnin Kebbi solely to pay condolences to families who lost their loved ones while I was away, not for political campaigns.

It’s painful and unfortunate. Some thugs emerged from the APC state headquarters, armed with weapons and stones, and attacked our convoy, destroying vehicles and injuring our supporters.

When it comes to politics in Kebbi State, there is no retreat, no surrender,” Malami said in an interview with journalists.

However, the All Progressives Congress in Kebbi State has denied any involvement in the incident.

The party’s Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafy, in a statement, condemned the attack and described Kebbi as a peaceful state.

No government that enjoys the massive support of the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state disrupted,” Assalafy said.

He further alleged that armed security personnel attached to Malami’s convoy opened fire during the confrontation, which he claimed escalated the situation.

Police authorities in Kebbi had yet to release an official statement on the attack as of the time of filing this report
